My nephew's four. He likes the one about the bear who can't find his hat. Same words every night, same order. He'd notice if I changed a line.

I've been thinking about what we read kids at bedtime. The form does a specific job. Repetition, soft landings, goodnight. It says the world holds together enough to close your eyes in. But the Western snowpack hit its lowest numbers in recorded history this spring, and Nebraska grassland burned faster than anyone could drive away from it. These are three bedtime stories set in the world we actually have. The kid hears a frog singing and an owl in a burrow and a bird who flew a long way. The adult reading aloud will know what they're about.

Closed-toe shoes with non-slip soles. Sunscreen applied before boarding. A life jacket fitted by the arm-raise test: arms overhead, the vest must not ride above the chin. A permission slip dated June 5, 2026, for a sixth-grade boat trip on Lake Powell.

Lake Powell has dropped roughly 100 feet below where the Bureau of Reclamation projected it would be. The reservoir may fall below minimum power pool elevation by December. The permission slip asks for a parent's signature, a swimming-ability checkbox, and an emergency contact number.

We pulled one number from the historical record and one from what actually happened. Then we set them next to each other and stopped writing. The gap between them is the piece. Some gaps are measured in feet of reservoir. Some in hundreds of thousands of acres of prairie that burned in a single afternoon. One lives in the uncanny space where a state got all the rain it was supposed to get and still declared a drought emergency.

Together they sketch the outline of a single season. Not a forecast. A receipt.

Snow Drought

The Mountains Held Sixty-Five Percent Less Snow

April 1 snowpack across the West registered 65% below the 1991–2020 normal. Lowest since monitoring began in 1981. At 1,012 of 1,570 stations, snow water equivalent broke records simultaneously, some of them over 70 years old. Not a regional anomaly. A continental one.

Rain Paradox

Full Rainfall, Half the Snow, Statewide Emergency

Washington got 104% of its normal winter precipitation. Plenty of water fell from the sky. Too warm to stick. Snowpack came in around half of normal, triggering the state's fourth drought emergency since 2015. The rain showed up. The cold didn't.

Prairie Fire

Nebraska's Largest Fire Burned Nearly One Rhode Island

The Morrill Fire: 642,029 acres in March 2026. Seventy miles in twelve hours. Part of a four-fire outbreak totaling 824,865 acres. The largest wildfire in Nebraska's recorded history. Rose White, 86, died trying to outrun it.

Drought Surge

Worst Drought Conditions Grew Sevenfold in Ninety Days

In January, 2% of U.S. land sat under the most severe drought classification. By late March: 15%. A sevenfold expansion in one quarter. Over 56% of the country was in some degree of drought by March 24. Winter didn't end it. Winter fed it.

Compound Extremes

Hot-Dry Events Doubled, Will Quintuple by Century's End

Global land areas now average roughly four compound hot-dry events per year. The preindustrial rate was about two. Under current emissions trajectories, frequency quintuples by 2100, concentrating on 2.6 billion people in low-income nations that produced almost none of the emissions responsible.

Power Pool

Seven States' Hydropower Hangs on 1.61 Feet of Water

Bureau of Reclamation's most probable forecast puts Lake Powell at 3,488.39 feet by December 31. The minimum elevation for generating hydroelectric power: 3,490 feet. The gap is 1.61 feet. Storage sits at 18% of capacity. Seven states draw power from that margin.
