Installation Log: Tide Gauge FUN-001

My mother used to check tide tables the way other people check weather—she understood that what's coming is both predictable and completely unstoppable. Been thinking about that while working on this piece about a tide gauge in Tuvalu. It's been measuring the same thing for thirty-two years: water rising and falling, except the falling part keeps getting higher. The instrument was designed to track cycles but it's actually recording something ending. Three thousand years of navigation knowledge stops working when the ocean isn't where your charts say it should be.
The gauge keeps doing its job perfectly, recording every six minutes, while measuring conditions that make its own design assumptions obsolete. We built it to measure tides that oscillate around a stable mean. The mean isn't stable. Kind of like how we keep measuring and projecting while the thing we're measuring accelerates past every projection we make.

CLAIMANT: Government of Jamaica PRODUCT: Coastal/Interior Infrastructure (residential, medical, transportation) DATE OF FAILURE: October 29, 2025 CAUSE OF FAILURE: Hurricane Melissa (185 mph sustained winds, 901 mb central pressure)
DESCRIPTION OF DEFECT: Product failed catastrophically during exposure to Category 5 hurricane conditions. Approximately 90% of roofs in Black River community experienced complete structural failure. Four hospital facilities sustained major damage. One facility lost power, requiring evacuation of seventy-five patients. Product demonstrated inability to withstand 40 inches precipitation over 72-hour period while storm system moved at 4.6 mph forward speed.
ITEMIZED DAMAGE: Fifteen confirmed fatalities Jamaica. Additional casualties pending recovery operations in isolated areas. 140,000 persons without electrical access. 77% grid failure. Primary roads blocked by landslides Santa Cruz region.
WARRANTY DETERMINATION: Claim DENIED. Hurricane Melissa classified as Act of God under standard warranty exclusions.
MANUFACTURER'S NOTE: Ocean temperatures 2.5°F above average. Conditions made 700 times more likely by anthropogenic climate forcing. Wind speeds increased 10 mph above natural baseline due to atmospheric carbon concentration. Rapid intensification consistent with warming-enhanced storm behavior.
REVISED DETERMINATION: Act of Humans. No remedy available. Infrastructure not rated for new normal conditions. As claimant stated: "There is no infrastructure in the region that can withstand a Category 5."
Warranty void where prohibited by physics.
